The Sericulture Research and Development Institute (SRDI) was created on
April 8, 1992 through Republic Act No. 7359 to serve as the National
Center for Sericulture in the country.
Commissioned to develop sericulture as an agro-based industry in
the Philipines, SRDI is mandated to: a) conduct researches in sericulture,
b) educate and train sericulturists, and c) extend technologies to
clienteles.
Based at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) in
Bacnotan, La Union, Philippines, SRDI spearheads the generation,
adaptation/verification, and dissemination of packages of sericulture
technologies suited for agro-ecological zones in the country.
It seeks to promote people empowerment through training, seminars,
and workshop as well as technology transfer to various clienteles.
SRDI’s Research and Development Program develops promising mulberry and
silkworm varieties/breeds, generates, verifies, adopts, and packages
appropriate mulberry, silkworm, and post cocoon technologies, fabricates
appropriate but low cost and efficient tools, equipment, and machineries
for sericulture, and conducts on socio-economics. Countryside development is the focus of SRDI’s Extension Program. It establishes sericulture centers, pilot sites, and medium-scale filature units to showcase the viability of sericulture in the Philippines. It also extends technical services to sericulture communities, development agents, and farmers through consultations, trainings, and other support services. |
