     One of the mandates of the Sericulture Research and Development Institute (SRDI) as embodied in Republic Act 7359 Section 3, is to educate and train sericulturists to develop sericulture as a rural agro-based industry in the Philippines. 

     These training programs on mulberry production and management, silkworm rearing, silk reeling, and weaving have been designed in order to effectively disseminate sericulture technologies and upgrade the skills of farmers, development agents, and extension workers. 

Technical Training in Sericulture

Date:    June 15 to October 15

            November 15 to March 15

Duration: 120 days

Participants: Extension workers, Entrepreneurs, Development Agents

Objective:  

     To develop and enhance participants’ ability to know about the technology on mulberry production and management, silkworm rearing and farm management, silkworm biology, silkworm egg production; silk processing; sericulture organization, extension, and management; and status and prospects of sericulture in developing countries.

Techniques:  

     The trainees are exposed to problems and are required to extend technical assistance in the sericulture community.

45-Day Intensive Training Course in Sericulture

Date:    January 16 to March 1

            June 1 to July 15

Duration:  45 days

Participants:   Extension Workers, Farmers, Housewives, Entrepreneurs

Objective:

      To develop and enhance participants’ ability to know about the technologies involved in moriculture, silkworm seed production, and in silk reeling.

Techniques:

      The trainees will be given details on the management of mulberry, practicals in silkworm rearing, silkworm egg production, and reeling technology.

15-Day Intensive Training Course in Mulberry Production and Management

Date:    January 15-30

            April 15-30

Duration:  15 days

Participants:      Farmers, Housewives, Extension workers, Entrepreneurs, Out-of-School Youth

Objective:  

     To develop and enhance participants’ ability to know about the technologies involved in moriculture.

Techniques:

     The trainees will be exposed to the production and management of mulberry with a special reference to nursery establishment and care of the mulberry plantation.

15-Day Intensive Training Course in Young-Age Silkworm Rearing

Date:    January 3-18

            June 3-18

Duration: 15 days

Participants:   Farmers, Cooperative members, Entrepreneurs

Objective:

            To develop and enhance participants’ ability to know about the technologies involved in young-age silkworm rearing.

Techniques:

            The trainees will be provided with knowledge and skills in young-age silkworm rearing.  The participants are exposed to actual young-age silkworm rearing.

   Environmental Conditions and the   

     Growth of Silkworms

   Brushing of Silkworms

   Harvesting, Storage, and Chopping of

   Treatment Before  and After Moulting

   Labor-Saving Rearing System

15-Day Intensive Training Course in Late-Age/Grown Silkworm Rearing

Date:    January 19 to February 4

            June 19 to July 4

Duration:  15 days

Participants:   Farmers, Entrepreneurs

Objective:

            To develop and enhance participants’ ability to know about the technologies involved in late-age/grown silkworm rearing.

Techniques:

            The trainees will be provided with knowledge and skills in late-age silkworm rearing.  The participants are exposed to actual late-age/grown silkworm rearing.

   Methods of Rearing of Grown Silkworms

15-Day Intensive Training Course in Silk Reeling

Date:    March 1-15

            October 1-15

Duration:  15 days

Participants:   Silk reelers

Objective:

            To develop and enhance participants’ ability to know about the technologies involved in silk reeling.

Techniques:

            The trainees will be provided with knowledge and skills in late-age silkworm rearing.  The participants are exposed to actual cocoon reeling, winding, doubling, twisting, and degumming.
